I am by nature an observer of things, which is why I like candid portraiture more than working in a studio. I find candid shooting more challenging because it requires finding the camera position where the best view of the subject and the best lighting come together. I happen to know a bit about portraiture because when I was a twenty-year-old itching to be a pro photographer I was fortunate to apprentice with Monte Zucker for two years from 1972 to 1974. He opened my eyes to the secrets of finding the most flattering angle and lighting for a face. My career took me a different direction, into printing and the Foreign Service, but I try to pass on in my tutorials and incorporate in every photo the most important lesson learned from him; isolate and simplify what is most important in the photo.
