Photo Chuck Gardner's Photo Album
Welcome to my photo album. It's a collection of photos taken since going digital in 2001 which are presented two ways; chronologically reflecting the order they were taken and by category. Those who have visited my web site devoted to teaching portrait lighting might be expecting to see many studio lit portraits. I don't have occasion to take many formal studio portraits because I don't shoot portraits for hire, only when a friend needs one. There are however many people photos of family and friends but most are candid shots; the type of photography I enjoy most.

I am by nature an observer of things, which is why I like candid portraiture more than working in a studio. I find candid shooting more challenging because it requires finding the camera position where the best view of the subject and the best lighting come together. I happen to know a bit about portraiture because when I was a twenty-year-old itching to be a pro photographer I was fortunate to apprentice with Monte Zucker for two years from 1972 to 1974. He opened my eyes to the secrets of finding the most flattering angle and lighting for a face. My career took me a different direction, into printing and the Foreign Service, but I try to pass on in my tutorials and incorporate in every photo the most important lesson learned from him; isolate and simplify what is most important in the photo.
